SCARBRO Caro Bowl Launch – The Old and the New

The 2018 Scarbro Caro Bowl season kicked off in October our Caro Bowl team will play at Pompallier Friday 26th October 6pm, Sunday 4th November 2pm and Friday 9th November 2018.

It was a great opportunity for Tennis Auckland to welcome all participating clubs and to share some of the history of one of New Zealand’s oldest sporting competitions.
New initiatives around the competition and event promotion were outlined for the clubs a week prior to the first round of matches on the weekend of October.
In his address, Tennis Auckland’s Mark Lewis made the following points:

The Old:

  • The Caro Bowl was first played in 1919 – nearly 100 years ago
  • The trophy was donated to Auckland Tennis in 1918 by the family of Maurice Caro who died in World War I
  • Only 12 clubs have won the Caro Bowl since inception – they are: Remuera, Eden Epsom, Parnell, Campbell Park, Royal Oak, Howick, Pompallier, West End, Blockhouse Bay, Mangere Combined, Kohimarama, Sunnyhills
  • This makes it one of NZ’s oldest sporting competitions
  • Other notable sporting competitions – Ranfurly Shield (1902), Americas Cup (1851), Bledisloe Cup (1931), Ryder Cup (1927)
  • NZ Tennis Competitions Wilding Shield 1921 – 2007 and Nunneley Casket 1929-2007 are sadly no longer played
  • Used to be combined men’s and women’s teams until they were separated in 1990
  • First sponsorship for the Caro Bowl came on stream in 1980-81
  • Scarbro Construction have sponsored Caro Bowl since 2003-04

The Facts:

  • The Caro Bowl is where top juniors often claim their first wins over top senior players
  • The competition brings together the best current, future and former players from around NZ
  • Caro Bowl is a chance for tennis individuals to experience a “team” environment

The New:

  • Two pools of four teams in round robin play for 2016 to reduce the number of meaningless matches
  • Matches scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday to give more viewing opportunities like NRL
  • Semis and finals spread across a four week period
  • Semis and finals played on different nights so people can attend both
  • Later start to the season to avoid colder weather
